Car shows are very popular in Southern California, with many proud owners showing off their classic cars. We had the chance to attend one of the most popular SoCal events—the VW Bus Car Show. It was held at the Huntington Beach Pier Plaza, and since Huntington Beach, CA is known for being dog-friendly, we brought our golden retriever, Kenzo, along for the fun.
How VW Bus Car Show Started
I was told by one of the VW Bus owners, Don Ramsey’s The Kowabunga Van Klan started Vintage VW bus shows at Huntington Beach Pier in May 2015.
Timeless Charm of the VW Bus
Interestingly, the (VW) Volkswagen Bus is also known as the Volkswagen Type 2 and is often referred to as the Microbus, Kombi, or Transporter.
The VW Bus has an iconic history and timeless charm that continues to attract car lovers.
A Brief History of the VW Bus
The idea for the VW Bus came from a simple sketch inspired by a cargo vehicle that Ben Pon saw at a VW plant. He designed the VW Bus, and it was introduced in Germany in 1950.
The VW Bus was built to be a simple, affordable van for both cargo and passengers. It quickly became known for its practicality and unique appearance.
Why the VW Bus Became a Cultural Icon
In the 1960s and ’70s, the VW Bus became a symbol of freedom, creativity, and exploration. Its practicality and affordability made it accessible to many—hippies, surfers, campers, and road-trippers alike. The VW Bus was more than just a mode of transportation—it represented a carefree lifestyle and a love for adventure.
Why the VW Bus is Still So Popular Today
Today, as we saw at the VW Bus car show, the VW Bus is making a strong comeback. Here’s why:
Nostalgia: People love the retro look—it reminds them of fun road trips, surfing, and joyful, simpler times.
Unique Vibe: Many people customize their VW buses, so no two vintage buses look exactly the same.
At the car show, we saw so many creatively customized VW buses—it was amazing to see the personal touches each owner added.
Community Love: Gatherings like the Kowabunga Van Klan in Huntington Beach, CA, showcase the passion and creativity of VW bus owners—and bring enthusiasts together.
Restored and Modernized: Vintage Vibes, Modern Comfort
Many classic VW Buses we saw were restored or reimagined. Some upgrades include:
– New engines
– Cozy camper interiors
– Interesting sound systems
– Stylish paint jobs and murals
These upgraded rides are both functional and fabulous, keeping the heart of the original design while adding modern-day luxuries.
Business on Wheels: How the VW Bus Powers Creativity
The VW Bus isn’t just a showpiece—it’s become a creative mobile business hub. In Southern California, entrepreneurs are using these vintage vehicles in smart and stylish ways: We met two business owners who utilize their VW Bus –
Danielle Murphy – SugarMama @sugarhighroller
A women-owned 1959 VW Double Bar Door Candy Bus. It’s not just a treat—it’s an experience, and the vintage van adds to the charm.
Todd Clark – The VW DJ Guy – @thevwdjguy
A vintage VW Bus transformed into a mobile DJ booth! It brings music and good vibes to weddings, pop-ups, and beach parties with a one-of-a-kind setup. One of our favorite VW Bus equipped with a disco ball too.

The weather was perfect, and we truly enjoyed spending two hours checking out all these cool and vintage VW Buses. It was such a delight meeting and chatting with the passionate VW Bus owners. Our dog Kenzo soaked up all the love and pets from them, too! It was an awesome car show, and we’re already looking forward to next year’s event.
