Introducing a new cat to your home can be made easier if it’s a gradual process to ensure a smooth transition for both the new cat and any existing pets. Most cat owners know that just the act of bringing a new cat home can cause stress resulting in mental and physical symptoms for both the new cat, existing pets, and you as the owner!
1. Prepare a Separate Space:
Before bringing the new cat home, set up a separate room with food, water, litter box, scratching post, and toys. This will give the new cat a safe space to acclimate and is a good time for you to begin to monitor how things are going in the early days of the transition.
2. Gradual Introduction:
Allow the new cat to explore only their designated space for a few days. This helps them get comfortable with their new environment without feeling overwhelmed.
3. Scent Swapping:
Exchange bedding or toys between the new cat and existing pets. This allows them to become familiar with each other’s scent before they meet.
4. Supervised Meetings:
After a few days, allow supervised meetings between the new cat and existing pets. Keep these interactions short and positive. Gradually increase the time they spend together and make sure you are present the entire time during their “play dates”. Watch for signs of aggression or stress in both the new cat and existing pets. If any negative behavior occurs, separate them and try again later. Reward both your new cat and existing pets with treats and praise during positive interactions to encourage good behavior.
5. Provide Vertical Space:
Cats feel safer when they have places to climb or perch. Ensure there are cat trees or shelves for the new cat to explore and feel comfortable.
6. Provide Soothing Solution or Hemp oil:
If either the new cat or the existing cat(s) are very anxious at any step, give some natural relaxing remedies to ease anxiety. Too much anxiety can lengthen the process and make it more stressful for all. Vitality Science’s Soothing Solution Tincture or Hemp Oil are both excellent holistic options.
Every cat is different. Some may take longer to adjust than others. Give them time and space to feel comfortable. The slow transition will be worth it in the end for everybody to become one big happy family!
